CABINET (VENTÓ)

Ebony
Ceylon, 1650-1680
19,6 x 26,7 x 24 cm

Small table cabinet with a single door (ventó). All the visible surfaces are profusely decorated with a fine, dense, shallow carved botanical pattern of flowers and leaf scrolls. The “ventó” was one of the typologies of Namban furniture produced in Japan for the European market. Japanese examples must have reached Goa and other Portuguese territories and were reproduced consistently by indo-Portuguese and Cingalo-Portuguese workshops. The present example is the only documented ebony cabinet of this type.
