Portrait of Francisco de Moura Corte Real, 3d Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo. He is depicted in armor, with a red silk band across his chest and the cross of the Order of Christ. His right hand holds a staff, an insignia of power. His coat of arms is displayed.on the upper right of the painting
Francisco de Moura Corte Real was Ambassador extraordinary of Spain in Rome where he made the acquaintance of the famous baroque architect Francesco Borromini. He was commissioned by Corte Real the interior decoration of the funerary chapel in the crypt of the Monastery of São Bento da Saude in Lisbon. D Francisco was the main early patron of Borromini.
