VISHNU VASUDEVA

Schist
Pala-Sena art, Bihar or Bengal
India, 11/12th century
H 76 cm

Schist stele carved in high relief, depicting the Hindu god Vishnu in his supreme and primordial form of Vasudeva. Vishnu’s majestic static posture contrasts with the fluidity of the surrounding figures and decoration. This composition carved in dark stone follows the standard Pala-Sena 10/12th century iconography for the deity.
