INFANT JESUS

Ivory
Hispano- Philippino, 16/ 17th century
H 46,5 cm
Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts, USA

Standing figure of the Infant Jesus as “Salvator Mundi”, his right hand raised in blessing, the left holding the orb with a cross, symbolizing his role as Saviour of the World.
The sculpture follows European baroque prototypes and in particular the work of the Sevillan artist Montanez. The chubbiness of the Infant and the outline of the eyes betray the hand of an eastern (Chinese?) carver.
