BUDA OR BODHISATTVA
Stone
China, Sui Dynasty (561-618)
Stone sculpture of the Buddha or of a Bodhisattva. The head which is missing would provide the visual clues to identify the nature of the deity. The figure wears a pleated monastic robe with long sleeves.
Sui period sculptures, as the present example, display a degree of realism and accuracy of body proportions absent in sculpture of earlier periods although the figure retains an obvious frontality and stiffness. |
