INSCRIBED STELE

Sandstone
Khmer, Cambodia, Koh-Kher, 10th century
H 60 cm, W 36 cm, D 11 cm

Inscribed stele of a Hindu Khmer temple, with Sanskrit text engraved in both sides. This stele must relate to a Shivite temple as Shiva and his consort Parvati are depicted in a niche, following the most common iconography for the couple. These stele are important elements for Cambodian epigraphy. Inscriptions are usually of a religious nature and document meritorious deeds, registering facts such as the name and the generosity of donors which contributed to the building of the temple.
