WINDOW SHUTTERS

Teak, mother of pearl and metal
Mughal India, circa 18th century
105 x 72 cm

Window shutters decorated with an Islamic design frame consisting of mother of pearl plaques secured by metal pins. A pattern of mother of pearl plaques inlaid on wood decorates the surface of the shutters. Each shutter is fitted with a metal ring with two affronted animal heads. This type of work is typical of the Gujarat workshops and similar to that of a well documented group of items exported to Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries. The Aga Khan Museum in Toronto holds a door with a very similar type of work.
