SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER

Wood with polychromy
Indo-Portuguese, 17th century
H 89 cm

A fine round sculpture in polychrome teakwood, depicting Saint Francis Xavier standing in a frontal and rigid posture, one arm close to the body, the other raised, with the index finger pointing skywards. The folds of the vest and the restraint of the polychromy enhance the power of this image, a rare carving of Saint Francis Xavier from a Goan 17th century workshop.
