SAINT PETER AND SAINT PAUL

Wood with polychromy
Goa, India, 17th century

Goa, India, 17th century In the round sculptures in teakwood with polychromy, Saint Peter and Saint Paul are carved standing in a majestic frontal posture, typical of the contemporary work of Goan workshops. An Indian hand is also noticeable in the treatment of the drapery, of the hair and of the beards of the Apostles. Saint Peter, the first head of the Christian church is depicted as a mature man with short beard. Saint Paul of Tarso is depicted with long hair and wavy long beard. In two niches in the Church of S. Caetano in Old Goa can be seen stone sculptures of these two Apostles with very similar iconography and detailing.
