SWORD

Wood, buffalo horn and metal
Batak, North Sumatra, Indonesia, 19th/20th century
L 61cm

A sword with horn handle fitted with a metal base ring, long single edged pointed blade and a sheath etched with geometric patterns, including the typical row of triangles along the side. The handle is carved with a kneeling male figure in a posture widely used in Batak carving. The shape of the horn did encourage this forward tilting of the figure typical of Batak hilts.
